Lorraine Cochrane was a Principal Teacher of Support for Learning for 21 years, before moving to work in the Further Education sector. She has delivered training at local and authority level, and has presented at HMIe and Learning & Teaching Scotland events.
Her interest is in the use of effective learning and teaching methods to support all learners within the classroom. She is a passionate advocate of the role that ICT has to play in promoting successful learning.

Ann Marie Whiteside: Ann Marie has over 20 years experience in a variety of education and children’s service’s posts, ranging from classroom teacher to senior manager with overall responsibility for all aspects of primary and secondary school provision within a local authority area.
Her specialist area is Quality Assurance, including self evaluation and improvement planning. She has extensive knowledge and skills in supporting schools to secure improvement in the overall quality of teaching and educational provision.

Understanding and using STACS

This half day course course is aimed at new heads of department/faculty and also those who would like more help and advice on how to make effective use of performance data. It is a very practical course and addresses interpreting, analysing and using STACS data (NCDs, RVs and PVs) as well as how to effectively identify your team’s strengths and areas for development.

Preparing for Senior Management (for aspiring Deputes and Headteachers)

This course aims to focus on 3 main areas: the preparatory phase leading up to applying for a post as a DHT/HT; the completion of a quality application form which evidences achievements; preparing for an interview, including presentation skills and interview techniques. In addition, there will be advice given on professional development and how to make an application form more likely to be selected for consideration.
Aims of the course:
- to provide a clear analysis of the differences between posts at middle and senior management level
- to ensure quality professional development is assiduously evidenced prior to applying for a post
- to deliver practical advice on the completion of an application form
- to give vital information on how to prepare for an interview
- to examine the interview process and help maximise prospects of success

Managing your department

This course is a practical and hands-on approach to managing and leading a department/faculty, aimed at those new to this and also those who would like further help and advice on the various aspects of managing a department. It addresses a wide range of management issues, including how to deal with challenges and underperformance in the team. There will be clear advice on effective leadership for learning in the context of Curriculum for Excellence, as well as structuring self-evaluation throughout the year to ensure improved attainment and achievement for all pupils. Other topics will include analysis and use of data to evaluate performances as well as how to prepare for an HMIe inspection.

CfE: The Inclusive Classroom - Effective Learning and Teaching Strategies

Increasingly subject specialists are being faced with a range of complex needs within the mainstream secondary class. Successful inclusion should benefit all pupils, but too often teachers can feel that they do not have the time or resources to cope with the demands asked of them. This course aims to deliver practical strategies to help teachers meet the needs of all pupils in their classes.
The main emphasis of the course will be demonstrating practical strategies and exploring free ICT resources that support the learning process for the wide range of pupils within the subject classroom.
It will also look at:
- definitions of Inclusion
- the challenges posed by some of the main hidden disabilities such as Asperger’s Syndrome, dyspraxia and dyslexia
- engaging and motivating all learners
- successful learning and teaching strategies
- using ICT to enhance learning

Curriculum for Excellence: Using ICT to Enhance Learning

Curriculum for Excellence states that pupils should “use ICT effectively in different learning contexts across the curriculum to access, select and present relevant information in a range of tasks”.
This course will look at a variety of software programmes which support the use of ICT to enhance learning. As well as looking at the recognised main commercial software programmes used in schools, there will be an emphasis on utilising the variety of freeware and shareware software now available to schools and pupils. There will also be a focus on the use of Social Tools to promote collaborative learning.

- Mind Mapping software
- TextHelp: Read and Write Gold for schools

CfE:Mind Mapping to Ensure Successful Learners

Mind Mapping is now a recognised planning and revision tool used by many subject departments. The various mind mapping software packages that are available enable staff and pupils to plan and develop their work, and then import into other programmes. In addition, they can be used to deliver lessons to the whole class in an exciting and interactive way.
This course will look at the use of Tony Buzan’s mind mapping techniques through the use of ICT. There will be the opportunity to download and use the free software programme XMind.
This course will cover:
- The basic rules of mind mapping
- Using mind maps for planning / revision
- Importing mind maps into MS Word
- Using mind mapping software as a whole-class teaching tool

This basic course is aimed at those teachers who wish to use ICT to enhance learning and teaching in the classroom, but feel uncertain about their own skills. Participants will be shown a variety of hardware and software packages and be given the opportunity to try these out with support from the tutor.
The software investigated will include:
- MS PowerPoint
- MyStudyBar - assistive software
- XMind - Mind Mapping software
The course will also look at using:
- Cameras
- Flipcams
- Voice Recorders
- iPads
There will also be a demonstration of how Social Media could be utilised in the classroom.
CfE - Developing Research Skills to Assist Independent Learning
A Curriculum for Excellence states that young people will be able: “To develop the capacity for critical thinking, through accessing, analysing and using information.”
One way to promote this capacity is through independent research; however, for many pupils, this involves little more than the copying of facts and figures. This course aims to look at strategies to support pupils in the techniques of research, note-taking and writing a final report.
This course will look at:
- setting clear tasks and time-scales
- use of guidance notes and writing frames
- involving parents/carers in delivering appropriate support
- the use of ICT and Social Tools
- taking and organising effective notes
- presenting the final report
