Curriculum for Excellence states that through the study of social studies young people will be able: “To develop the capacity for critical thinking, through accessing, analysing and using information”. One way to promote this capacity is through independent research; however, teachers find that the investigation can, for many pupils, involve little more than the copying of facts and figures. This course aims to look at strategies to support pupils in the techniques of research, note-taking and writing a final report. This course will look at: • setting clear tasks and time-scales • use of guidance notes and writing frames • involving parents/carers in delivering appropriate support • the use of the internet • taking and organising effective notes • writing first and final drafts
