History

 

Jim McGonigle was Principal Teacher at Hermitage Academy for twenty seven years. He is a past president of the Scottish Association of Teachers of History (SATH), and a marker and setter for the SQA in Advanced Higher History. He was also commissioned to provide teaching materials and assessment items for the SQA.  He has also delivered in-service lectures to PGDE students at the University of Strathclyde.  He has written and edited several books on various themes to support the teaching of History from S1 to S6 in Scottish schools.

 

Teaching Higher History
Thursday 6th June 2013

This is a one-day overview of the Higher History course, suitable for teachers who are new to teaching this course as well as teachers seeking new ideas and insight into the SQA system.

During the day, the following areas will be addressed:

  • tackling essay writing in Paper 1,
  • approaches to Paper 2,
  • the use of ICT to support the course and support available from LTScotland as well as commercial agencies.

Staff may wish to bring with them copies of their current courses, outlines and teaching approaches as well as the 2011 SQA Higher paper. Staff may wish to bring a memory stick to take away copies of materials developed.

Preparing Candidates for Advanced Higher History

This one-day course is aimed at both teachers new to the teaching of Advanced Higher History and experienced teachers whose aim is to improve the performance of their candidates at this level.

During the course of the day the following areas will be covered:

  • The structure of the exam
  • Part A of the SQA exam - essay writing
  • Part B of the SQA exam - source analysis
  • The dissertation
  • Resources and help
  • SQA quality assurance procedures

There will also be opportunities for discussion and reflection.
