Eddie Mullan is Coordinating editor of the Maths in Action Series; author of titles for Leckie and Leckie which include Success Maker in Higher Maths, Grade Booster for Higher Maths, Practical Papers for SQA Exams, Advanced Higher and Active Maths CfE Level 3. Now retired, Eddie was a PT Maths in the Borders for 20 years and is currently the chairman of the Scottish Mathematical Council.

Implementing Mathematics at National 4 and 5

This course is to help departments plan their implementation to make the transition from Standard Grades/Intermediates to National 4 and 5 as smoothly as possible. It will consider the various facets of the new courses and will engage in a broad development discussion. The areas covered will include:
- The four new courses and how they will be presented
- Organising, coordinating and timetabling
- Assessment in its various forms
- Educating both the pupil and the parent
- Using CfE to prepare the student for S4
- Resourcing the new approach

Teaching Higher Mathematics

This course is aimed at those teachers new to delivering Higher mathematics or those looking for new ideas or wishing to share. It has also acted as a refresher course for those who have not presented at Higher for a while. During the course we will examine: SQA conditions and arrangements; preparation for assessment (including NABS), planning, scheduling and their interrelationship; the collection of evidence for appeal purposes – exam balance and marking at Higher; approaches that might save you time; creation of IT resources to assist in delivery, assessment and problem solving; existing resources and record keeping. The whole syllabus is considered but focus is given to the topics that are traditionally considered awkward or difficult.

Teaching Advanced Higher Mathematics

This course is aimed at those teachers new to delivering Advanced Higher mathematics or those looking for new ideas or wishing to share. It has also acted as a refresher course for those who have not presented at Advanced Higher for a while. During the course we will examine: SQA conditions and arrangements; preparation for assessment (including NABS), planning, scheduling and their interrelationship; the collection of evidence for appeal purposes – exam balance and marking at Advanced Higher; approaches that might save you time; creation of IT resources to assist in delivery, assessment and problem solving; existing resources and record keeping. Some extra time is spent on topics that traditionally students find awkward (e.g. Vectors), or lengthy (e.g. sequences or differential equations) or outside their comfort zone (e.g. number theory and proof).

Designing a Higher Maths Prelim

The course will examine the purpose and conditions that the assessment must meet; the paperwork available for helping you to meet that purpose; the course content that the questions must address.
