Modern Languages

  Douglas Angus has been a Principal Teacher of Modern Languages, a Quality Improvement Officer, Development Officer for Higher Still and is also the author of a number of books, including 'How to Pass Higher French'. He has been involved with providing training for Modern Language teachers nationally for a number of years, and is a former chair of SALT. He has also been a setter for Intermediate 1 and 2 German

Teaching Higher Modern Languages

This course is aimed at teachers new to delivering Higher French, German and Spanish or teachers seeking new ideas and specialist support. The course looks at how to plan and carry out a course at higher level in Modern Languages.

During the day, the following topics will be covered:

  • Putting in place a learners’ contract and induction plan
  • Pre-assessment, assessing level of knowledge and getting the starting level right
  • Getting the timing right throughout the year
  • Increasing active learning in the classroom
  • Finding listening resources
  • Teaching writing
  • Developing speaking skills
  • Developing assessments through the year, tracking and monitoring progress
  • Teaching the grammar necessary to succeed
  • Using Scholar and the Internet
  • Preparing for NABs and external assessment
  • Providing homework which stretches and involves learners

Teaching Advanced Higher Modern Languages - NEW COURSE

This course is aimed at teachers new to delivering Advanced Higher French, German and Spanish or teachers seeking new ideas and specialist support. The course looks at how to plan and carry out a course at Advanced Higher level in Modern Languages.
During the day, the following topics will be covered:

  • Close study of the arrangements document
  • Preassessment, assessing level of knowledge and getting the starting level right
  • Teaching and learning issues
  • Teaching with minimum class contact time: can we deliver on two periods a week?
  • The role of film in extended reading and viewing
  • The use of literary texts
  • The folio
  • Passing NABs and external assessment
  • Preparing for the external speaking test
  • Looking at support materials available
  • Using Scholar and the Internet


Modern Languages - National 4 and 5 Qualifications - NEW COURSE

  • look in depth at the new qualifications which will start in 2013/14
  • discuss the topic areas which should be covered
  • examine the impact on existing practice for Standard Grade and Intermediate courses

  • relate the Nationals to CfE and the new Revised Higher
  • discuss and plan ways of teaching, assessing, recording and reporting
